Title: Common Errors Seen in the MoCA

Presented by:
Dr. David Loring, PhD, ABPP, FAAN, FAES
Professor, Departments of Neurology and Pediatrics
Neuropsychology Program Director (Neurology)
Editor-in-Chief, Neuropsychology Review

Date: Wednesday, March 18, 2026

Time: 12:00 PM Eastern Time (US and Canada)

Description: Join Dr. David Loring as he reviews common errors encountered in the use of the Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA). Drawing on clinical experience and research data, he will highlight mistakes that frequently occur with this widely used cognitive screening tool. The presentation will highlight errors commonly made by cognitively normal individuals (e.g., “hippo” for rhinoceros; difficulty with Necker cube copy). Dr. Loring will also discuss the major interpretive risk of treating a single MoCA score as a fixed estimate of global cognition with a fixed cutoff score to identify impairment, emphasizing the importance of considering demographic influences, measurement variability, and the role of the MoCA as a screening measure rather than a comprehensive cognitive evaluation.

David Loring, faculty for this educational event, has no relevant financial relationship(s) to disclose with ineligible companies.
